Shh! (Oxley College #1)
Release Date: 02/23/15

Summary from Goodreads:
Nineteen-year-old Olivia Dean has the perfect reputation, the perfect boyfriend, and an increasingly perfect CV. She has it all, until Christian breaks up with her in public, calling her out as a self-gratifying sexoholic: the kind that plays solo. But Olivia doesn’t masturbate all night — the only thing she does is sleep … right?

Now all the boys on campus seem to want her attention for the absolutely wrong reason — including resident hottie, Logan Hays. He's pulling out his best moves to gain her attention, so resisting his sexy charm is hard work. With rapidly slipping grades, a disturbingly lurid reputation and demanding parents, Olivia must discover the truth behind her rumoured sleeping problem. If she doesn't, the perfect life she's worked so hard for may slip away, including the one person who has Olivia breaking all her rules — Logan.

What do you do when you’re asleep?

My Review

4/5
I would just like to point out that I really like the cover for the book. There is no half-naked people rubbing up against each other and you can't see the full face of the one person on it, which allows the reader to imagine what the characters look like without much outside influence. I also love the colours. I'm not an expert on visual aesthetics so I cannot explain why it appealed to me, just that it did.

A lot of the issues raised in this book are typical coming-of-age issues involving breaking away from the hold of parents or social expectations, etc. The story is pulling away from the YA ideal of a quick-fix ending where everything got solved perfectly. Without spoiling anything I will just point out that I liked the way that the problems faced did not have immediate solutions. Olivia had to deal with everything and solve it herself without some magical outside influence swooping in to save the day. Not even Logan helped too much to take away from the fact that she was in charge of her own fate.

As with all stories involving bullying on such a large scale I found this difficult to believe, especially at third-level where people are more mature and don't tend to care about gossip about random strangers. (Or maybe that's just my university). However, I always have to bite my tongue and continue reading without questioning the logistics and I did. Shh! is different from most of these books as the reason for bullying is a bit unconventional.

The synopsis is a little misleading as it sounds as though she is in high demand because of her nightly habits but in reality it is bullying that she faces more so than actual propositions. I was expecting a bit more humour given the nature of the synopsis but I liked the book nonetheless. Just be wary that it does not set the tone for the book (if you read it the way I did.)

[sidenote: it took me 25% of the book to realise that it was set in Australia]
